Is there a reason we’re using Ubuntu Medium for the body typeface, rather than Ubuntu Regular. It seems a bit heavy.

I agree, for the body of these messages ‘Medium’ is a bit heavy, ‘Regular’ should do. For the title of the topics I think medium is fine.
P.S. in Jujucharms discourse they use regular everywhere
